The cheapest floor-care setup that actually works
Two modest machines cover more ground than one expensive one, cost less to run, and each does the job it was designed for.

A corded machine for the weekly clean plus a very light stick for the two-minute jobs. That pair costs less than one mid-range cordless, has no battery in the machine doing the heavy work, and runs on about ten dollars of electricity over three years. Each tool does what it was designed for instead of compromising at both.
The single-machine assumption is doing the damage
The whole category is sold on the premise that you buy one vacuum. So every machine is designed to be adequate at everything — carpet and hard floor, floors and stairs, whole-house cleans and thirty-second spills — and the compromises land in the middle of the price range, where a cordless stick tries to be a carpet machine and does not quite manage it.
Split the job in two and the compromises disappear. A corded upright or canister at 800 to 1,200 published watts does the weekly deep clean with no runtime limit. A 2.8 to 4.4 lb stick handles crumbs, stairs and the car. Neither is pretending to be the other.

Neither machine has a battery, so there is no replacement cost. Both have washable filters on the models we recommend, so there is no filter cost either.
Eleven dollars over three years, and nothing else. No battery, no filter subscription, no bags. Compare that to a mid-range cordless whose battery is a consumable with no published cycle rating, and the arithmetic is not close.
Where the pair genuinely loses
Two places, and they are real.
Convenience. A cordless machine gets used more often, and frequency beats power for surface dust. A vacuum you can grab in four seconds is used four times as often as one you have to unwind, and that is a genuine advantage that does not appear in any specification.
Storage. Two machines take more space than one. In a small flat that can be decisive, and it is a fair reason to buy a single cordless instead.
The same logic in the other categories
It generalizes, and in each case the split answer is cheaper and better:
- Carpet. A 7 lb portable spot cleaner you own, plus a rented commercial machine twice a year, beats a 20 lb upright that lives in a cupboard. The arithmetic is here.
- Mopping. A basic steam mop for weekly work plus a scrubbing machine only if your floors genuinely need it. Most do not.
- Robots. A cheap robot for daily maintenance plus a proper upright for the weekly clean, rather than an expensive robot expected to do both. Robots do not deep-clean carpet, whatever the pascal figure says.
What we cannot tell you
Whether you will actually use two machines. Some households do and some quietly settle on whichever one is nearest. That is a question about you rather than about specifications, and it is worth being honest with yourself about before buying either.
Common questions
Is it cheaper to buy two vacuums than one?
Frequently, yes. A corded upright plus a light corded stick often costs less than one mid-range cordless, has no battery to replace in either machine, and runs on about $11 of electricity over three years.

Not separate, but the shape matters: a canister or a light stick is far easier on a staircase than a 13.7 lb upright. That is one of the strongest arguments for splitting the job across two machines.
Does the two-machine approach work for carpet cleaning too?
It is arguably strongest there. A 7 lb portable you own handles the unscheduled messes within minutes — which is when they are removable — and a rental twice a year handles the whole floor with a bigger machine than you would buy.
