Start here: buy the bin, not the runtime
Almost every cordless vacuum in this price band publishes the same headline: forty minutes. Shark's IX141, IY143H, IZ362H and IZ376H all say 40. Bissell's PowerClean 4173 says 40. The Dyson V8, which costs several times as much, also says 40. If runtime is the number you are shopping on, you are shopping on a number that does not separate these machines at all.
What does separate them is dust cup capacity, and it varies by a factor of nearly four across machines with identical runtime claims. The Shark IX141 holds 0.34 quarts. The IZ376H holds 0.79. The Tikom V500 holds 1.3 liters. In practice that is the difference between stopping three times to empty during one clean and stopping once — and the interruption people actually complain about after a month of ownership is emptying, not charging.
How the category divides
There are really three machines being sold under one label. Lightweight hard-floor sticks (the Vacmaster VSD1001 at 4.4 lb, the Eureka Blaze at 2.8 lb corded) are for crumbs, stairs and cars — they have little or no brushroll agitation and will disappoint on pile. Full-size cordless sticks (Shark, Levoit, Tineco, Bissell, Tikom) are the mainstream buy: 5 to 8 lb, a driven brushroll, and enough battery for a floor or two. Corded uprights and canisters (Shark's NV356E, Bissell's CleanView line, Eureka's PowerSpeed) still exist for a reason, and it is the reason the rest of this site keeps coming back to: they have no battery to replace.
That last point is the whole cost argument. A cordless vacuum's battery is a consumable with a finite cycle life, and most manufacturers in this band do not publish a cycle rating at all. When the cell fades, a machine with a removable battery — the Shark IZ362H, the Tikom V500 — can be revived for the price of a cell. A machine with a sealed battery becomes landfill. That single spec is worth more over five years than any suction figure on the box.

The pattern is consistent: the money above about $150 buys durability, filtration and hair management — not minutes and not, as far as anyone publishes, suction. Dyson's V11 Origin is the only machine on this site that publishes a figure in air watts (185 AW), a unit you can actually compare. Everyone else publishes pascals, or motor wattage, or nothing at all, and none of those tell you what reaches the floor.
The mistake buyers make
They buy on the pascal number. A listing shouting 55,000 Pa looks like it must out-clean one claiming 40,000. But pascals measure sealed static pressure at the motor inlet, brands measure it differently, and none of them publish their method — so the figure is not comparable between manufacturers and barely comparable within one. A 450 W Tikom motor and a 181 W Shark motor are not four times apart in cleaning; they are measured differently.
The second mistake is buying a heavy machine for a job that is mostly above the floor. If your real complaint is stairs, upholstery and the car, a 7.9 lb stick with a big bin is the wrong answer and a 4.4 lb machine or a canister is the right one. Read the weight before the suction claim.

Is a cordless vacuum powerful enough to replace an upright?+−
On hard floors and low-pile rugs, yes — the published figures and the physical design both support it. On deep pile carpet the honest answer from the spec sheets is that a 180 W cordless motor and an 800-1,200 W corded upright with a driven brushroll are not doing the same job. We have not tested either, and we are not going to pretend the numbers say something they do not.
Why do so many cordless vacuums claim exactly 40 minutes?+−
Because they are rated the same way: at the handheld unit, in the lowest power mode, usually with no powered floor head attached. Shark states this qualifier openly on its listings. It is not dishonest, but it does mean the figure describes a configuration you will rarely clean in.
What does a removable battery actually save me?+−
The machine. A lithium cell has a finite cycle life, and most brands in this band do not publish a cycle rating. When it fades, a removable-battery machine takes a new cell; a sealed one is replaced entirely. The Shark IZ362H and the Tikom V500 both publish removable batteries.
Are pascal (Pa) suction figures comparable between brands?+−
No. Pa measures sealed static pressure and every manufacturer measures it differently without publishing the method. Air watts, which Dyson publishes for the V11 Origin at 185 AW, are closer to a comparable unit — but almost nobody else in this price band publishes them.
How much does it cost to run a corded vacuum?+−
Using the U.S. average residential electricity price of 18.34 cents per kWh, a 1,200 W upright run 45 minutes a week costs about $25.75 over three years. Electricity is never the expensive part of owning a vacuum — filters, bags and batteries are.
