Why vacuum suction numbers are mostly meaningless
Three units, no shared standard, and one of them measures electricity consumption rather than cleaning. A short guide to what you are actually being told.

There are three units in circulation and they measure different things. Air watts describe work done at the cleaner head and are comparable. Pascals describe sealed static pressure, are measured differently by every brand, and are not comparable. Motor watts describe electricity consumption and tell you nothing about cleaning at all.
Motor watts: a consumption figure wearing a performance costume
This is the most common number on a budget listing and the least useful. Watts measure how much electricity the motor draws. A 1,200 W upright uses more power than a 720 W one; whether it moves more air depends on the fan design, the sealing of the body, the filter, the hose and the head — none of which the wattage figure describes.
It is a rough proxy within one product line from one manufacturer. Across brands it is close to noise. And it is genuinely misleading on cordless machines, where a 181 W Shark and a 450 W Tikom are not in a 2.5:1 relationship on anything a floor would notice.
Pascals: real physics, no shared method
Pascals measure sealed static pressure — how hard the machine pulls when the inlet is blocked. That is a genuine physical quantity and it correlates loosely with the ability to lift heavy debris.
The problem is that every manufacturer measures it at a different point, by a different method, and not one of them publishes the method. A robot brand claiming 10,000 Pa and another claiming 10,000 Pa are making two unverifiable statements that happen to use the same number. Within one brand's range the figure is a useful tier indicator. Across brands it is not a comparison and should not be treated as one.
There is also a conceptual issue: sealed pressure describes the machine at the moment it is doing no work at all, because nothing is flowing. Cleaning requires airflow, which is a different measurement entirely.
Air watts: the one that means something
Air watts combine airflow and suction into a single figure describing work done at the cleaner head. That is what actually lifts dirt, and it is the closest thing this industry has to a comparable unit.
The catch is who publishes it. Across every machine on this site, exactly one manufacturer does: Dyson, which states 185 AW for the V11 Origin. Nobody in the budget field publishes air watts at all. Tineco's 160 W is a suction-power rating and not the same measurement, despite the similar-looking number — a resemblance that is genuinely easy to misread.
What to use instead
- Bin capacity. Published in comparable units by everyone, and it decides how often you stop.
- Rated runtime, with its qualifier. Levoit and Bissell publish theirs broken down by mode; that detail is worth more than any suction claim.
- Brushroll design. Whether agitation exists, and whether it is published as anti-tangle. On carpet this matters more than suction does.
- Filtration, and whether a standard is named. Shark cites ASTM F1977-22 and IBR Laboratories. A named standard is checkable; a bare percentage is not.
- Weight and noise. Both published in comparable units, and both decide whether the machine gets used.
Every one of those is published in a form you can compare across brands. Together they tell you far more about whether you will be happy with a vacuum than any suction figure would, even if a comparable one existed.
