Carpet Cleaners

The best carpet cleaners for pets

Pet messes are wet, they soak below the surface, and they smell. That combination changes what you should buy, and it usually means a smaller machine than you expect.

By Scooter M. · Published September 1, 2026

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty vacuums. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead is read the manuals, compile the published specifications, and work out what each machine costs to run for three years — the method is written out in full.

We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what we recommend or the order we recommend it in. Full disclosure.

The short answer: the Bissell Little Green Pet Pro 3909. Not because it is the biggest machine — it is one of the smallest — but because pet accidents need dealing with within minutes, and a portable that lives in a cupboard gets used while a 20-pound upright does not. It publishes pet-specific tools and Bissell's strongest suction claim in the portable line.

Speed of deployment beats capacity here

This is the specific thing that makes pet cleaning different from carpet cleaning generally. The window matters. A wet accident treated in the first few minutes comes up; the same accident found the next morning has soaked into the underlay and possibly the subfloor, and no amount of extraction from the surface reaches it.

Which means the machine that wins is the one you can have running in ninety seconds. A 7 lb Bissell Little Green Mini or a 9.4 lb Hoover CleanSlate Plus lives in a cupboard, plugs in, and works. A 20.5 lb Hoover SmartWash Pet has to be fetched, assembled and filled — and by then you have already blotted the mess with a towel and told yourself you will deal with it properly at the weekend.

What actually addresses odor

Three published mechanisms, and they do different things:

  • Enzyme and oxy formulas. Bissell publishes Pet Pro Oxy Urine Eliminator with the ProHeat 3588F and the Little Green Pet Pro, describing it as removing pet stains and odors rather than masking them. Shark publishes that the CarpetXpert traps and removes odors including pet urine rather than covering them. Both are formula claims, and both formulas are ongoing purchases.
  • Antimicrobial brushrolls. Hoover publishes an antimicrobial PowerSpin Pet brush roll on the PowerDash and odor-resistant FlexForce brushes on the SmartWash. Bissell publishes antimicrobial brush rolls plus a FreshStart dirt tank on the ProHeat 3588F. These address the machine smelling, not the carpet.
  • Extraction depth. The mechanism that actually removes the source. Dual brushrolls and a heater — the ProHeat 3588F — reach further into the pile than a single-brush machine.

Only the third of those removes anything. The first two make what remains smell less and stop your machine becoming part of the problem.

Every figure above is the manufacturer's own published number. Where a manufacturer publishes nothing, the row says "Not published" rather than an estimate.

What the numbers say

  • Bigger tanks than the Mini, so a full room of spots is one fill
  • Pet-specific tools are in the box rather than sold on
  • Self-cleaning hose tool carried over from the Mini

Where it stops

  • Bissell does not publish a machine weight or an exact tank volume for this model
  • The suction claim is Bissell's own against an unnamed competitor
  • Pet formula is the priciest of the Bissell consumables

Who it is for

Homes with a puppy, an old dog, or a cat with opinions.

What the numbers say

  • Dual counter-rotating brushrolls double the agitation of the single-brush machines
  • A published drying-time claim, which almost nobody in this category makes
  • Built-in pre-treater means you are not carrying a spray bottle around as well
  • 8-foot hose, the longest here

Where it stops

  • Two formulas included means two formulas to keep buying
  • The most expensive machine on this page
  • Bissell does not publish a comparable machine weight for this model

Who it is for

Households with recurring pet accidents, where the same spots get cleaned repeatedly.

What the numbers say

  • The self-cleanout tool rinses itself in one press, which is the single most annoying job on any extractor
  • 7-foot hose reaches a full flight of stairs from the landing
  • Same 1-gallon tank and 4-row brush as the cheaper 3952

  • 40 oz clean capacity — a 7" wide tool with the tank to actually feed it
  • Two tool widths, so it covers a rug as well as a crevice
  • Hose rinse, which is the same smell-prevention idea as Bissell's HydroRinse

What the numbers say

  • Names ASTM F2828 as its test method — the only carpet cleaner here that does
  • Built-in handheld spot cleaner means one machine instead of an upright plus a Little Green
  • Three tools and a dual-tank system
  • PowerSpray is designed not to oversoak, which is the usual cause of slow drying

Every figure above is the manufacturer's own published number. Where a manufacturer publishes nothing, the row says "Not published" rather than an estimate.

What the numbers say

  • A 5-year warranty is an unusual thing to publish on a machine full of pumps and seals, and it is worth real money
  • No trigger to hold is a genuine relief over a whole room
  • Spot Chaser pre-treat wand is detachable and useful on its own

Where it stops

  • 0.5-gallon tank on a 20.5 lb machine is the worst capacity-to-weight ratio here
  • The tall 43.5-inch body needs proper storage height
  • Automatic operation means less control over a stubborn patch

Who it is for

Buyers who value the warranty and hate holding a trigger.

The one to skip

Skip the Hoover SmartWash Pet if accidents are your main problem. Its 5-year warranty is the longest published on this site and its automatic push-to-clean operation is genuinely pleasant. But at 20.5 lb with a 0.5-gallon tank it is the slowest machine here to deploy, and pet accidents are a speed problem before they are a capacity problem. It is a good machine bought for the wrong job.

The two-machine answer

For a pet household the sensible setup is usually a portable for accidents plus something bigger for the periodic deep clean — and the something bigger is very often a rental rather than a purchase.

A Bissell Little Green Pet Pro or a Hoover CleanSlate Plus handles every accident, every time, immediately. Twice a year you rent a large machine and do the whole floor. That combination costs less than a mid-range upright plus its formula, and it matches how pet messes actually arrive. The rental arithmetic is here.

What we cannot tell you

Whether any of these removes a specific odor from a specific carpet. Odor removal depends on how deep the liquid went, how long it sat, and what is underneath — none of which a machine specification addresses. If a mess reached the underlay, no surface extractor reaches it, and that is a limitation of the category rather than of any model. The pet urine guide covers what to do in that case honestly.

Common questions

What is the best carpet cleaner for pets?

The Bissell Little Green Pet Pro 3909 for most households — not because it is the biggest, but because pet accidents need treating within minutes and a portable that lives in a cupboard actually gets used. For whole-floor deep cleans, the Bissell ProHeat 2X 3588F publishes the strongest tool set.

Do carpet cleaners remove pet urine odor?

They remove what they can reach. If the liquid soaked into the underlay or subfloor, no surface extractor gets to it, and that is a limit of the category rather than of any model. Formula claims from Bissell and Shark address odor in what remains at the surface.

Should I buy an upright or a portable for pet messes?

A portable, in most cases. Accidents are a speed problem: treated within minutes they come up, left overnight they soak in. A 7 to 9 lb portable is running in ninety seconds; a 20 lb upright is not.

What is a self-cleaning hose tool and do I need one?

It flushes the hose and internal path with clean water after use — Bissell calls it HydroRinse, Hoover calls it a hose rinse tool. You need it, because a portable used on pet messes retains organic material otherwise, and a machine that smells is a machine nobody uses.

Do antimicrobial brushrolls help with pet smells?

They stop the machine itself smelling, which is worth having. They do not remove odor from your carpet — that requires extraction of the source. Hoover publishes antimicrobial brushrolls on the PowerDash and SmartWash; Bissell publishes them on the ProHeat 3588F.
