Everyone in this category says they tested twenty vacuums. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead is read the manuals, compile the published specifications, and work out what each machine costs to run for three years — the method is written out in full.

Mapping is worth paying for. Obstacle avoidance mostly is not, at this price. LiDAR builds the map that makes cleaning efficient and zones possible — buy that. The camera-based object recognition that dodges socks and cables lives above $400 and is not published on any machine here. What budget robots publish is collision and drop sensing, which is a different, smaller thing.
Three technologies, one marketing phrase
LiDAR is a spinning laser that measures distance in 360 degrees. It builds a floor plan, which is what enables efficient row cleaning, multi-floor maps, room targeting and no-go zones. The Roomba 105 Vac publishes ClearView LiDAR; Roborock publishes 360-degree and PreciSense LiDAR; Lefant's M2 Plus and ILIFE's A30 Pro publish LDS LiDAR with SLAM. This is the feature worth buying.
Infrared and bumper sensing detects that something is there when the robot is nearly touching it, and turns. Lefant publishes "FreeMove 3.0" with 6D anti-collision infrared on the M210; eufy publishes an infrared sensor and drop-sensing on the 11S MAX. This prevents damage. It does not plan around anything.
PSD proximity detection sits between the two. Lefant publishes it on the M2 Plus: a 190-degree detection angle, stated to identify and avoid objects from 1.6 inches away. That is close-range avoidance rather than the see-it-across-the-room object recognition that the phrase implies.
What LiDAR genuinely buys you
Efficient coverage. Rows instead of a random walk, which on a large floor is the difference between finishing and running out of battery.
No-go zones. The ability to say "never go behind the toilet" or "stay away from the cat bowls" without physically blocking the route.
Room targeting. Cleaning the kitchen after dinner without running the whole house.
Multi-floor maps. Roborock and Lefant both publish this; it is what makes a robot workable in a two-story home.
Recharge and resume. Only possible if the robot knows where it stopped.
Roborock also publishes something quietly useful on the Q7 L5: it identifies areas like cables and table legs and suggests no-go zones rather than requiring you to notice the problem yourself. That is a sensible middle ground between full recognition and nothing.
When the cheap sensor is genuinely enough
A single-floor apartment under about 800 square feet, tidied before the robot runs, does not need a map. The eufy 11S MAX and the Lefant M210 will cover that floor by persistence rather than by planning, and they publish two advantages the mapped machines do not: bigger bins (600 ml and 500 ml, against the Roborock Q7 L5's 270) and lower noise (55 and 52 dB, against 60 to 72).
There is also the eufy's genuine no-app design. No account, no firmware update, nothing that stops working the day a cloud service is retired. For a machine you want to still work in ten years, that is not nothing.

How to decide
Ask what you actually want the robot to stop doing. If the answer is "missing the back bedroom", buy LiDAR. If it is "going into the room with the dog's water bowl", buy LiDAR — you need zones. If it is "eating a phone charger", no machine at this price is published to solve that, and the honest fix is picking the charger up.
What we cannot tell you
How well any of these navigate in practice. Published LiDAR is not the same as good path planning, and implementations differ enormously between manufacturers who all describe them in identical marketing language. Nobody publishes a coverage-efficiency figure, nobody publishes a stuck-rate, and we have not run any of these machines across a real floor.
Common questions
Do budget robot vacuums avoid obstacles?+−
They detect and turn away from them, which is not the same thing. Budget robots publish infrared or PSD collision sensing; camera-based object recognition — identifying a sock or a cable as an object to route around — is not published on any machine in this price band.
Is LiDAR worth it on a robot vacuum?+−
Yes, more than any other feature at this price. It is what enables efficient coverage, no-go zones, room targeting, multi-floor maps and recharge-and-resume. Everything else is a preference; this changes the class of machine.
Will a robot vacuum avoid pet accidents?+−
Not at this price. Avoiding a specific hazard by recognizing what it is requires camera-based object recognition, and none of the robots on this site publish that capability. If that is the reason you are buying, this tier does not solve it.
Do I need no-go zones?+−
If there is any part of your floor a robot should never enter — a pet feeding station, a cable nest, a room with fragile things — then yes, and that means LiDAR. Zones only exist where there is a map to draw them on.
Are unmapped robot vacuums a waste of money?+−
No. In a single-floor space under about 800 square feet they cover the floor by persistence, and they publish two genuine advantages: bigger on-board bins (600 ml on the eufy against 270 on the mapped Roborock) and lower noise (52 to 55 dB against 60 to 72).
