A robot vacuum is not a vacuum that works while you are out. It is a floor-maintenance machine, and understanding that difference is what decides whether you will be happy with one.
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty vacuums. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead is read the manuals, compile the published specifications, and work out what each machine costs to run for three years — the method is written out in full.

Yes, if you treat it as a maintenance machine rather than a replacement. A robot run every day keeps floors in a state that weekly manual vacuuming never achieves, because frequency beats power for surface dust and hair. It does not deep-clean carpet, it does not do stairs, and you will still own a regular vacuum.
What a robot genuinely does well
Frequency. This is the whole argument and it is a good one. A floor vacuumed every day at moderate suction is cleaner, most of the time, than a floor vacuumed hard once a week — because surface dust and pet hair accumulate continuously and a daily pass never lets them build up. That is a real change in how a home feels, and no upright achieves it because nobody vacuums daily by hand.
Under furniture. The published heights matter here: the eufy 11S MAX is 2.85 inches tall, the Lefant M210 and the Tikom G8000 Max 2.99 inches. Those go under beds and sofas that a full-size vacuum head cannot reach without you moving the furniture, which nobody does.
Scheduled hard floors. Kitchens, hallways and entryways collect debris daily. A robot scheduled after dinner handles that without anyone thinking about it.
What a robot genuinely cannot do
Stairs. No robot on the market climbs them. If your home has stairs, you own a regular vacuum too, and that cost belongs in the comparison.
Deep-clean carpet. Covered in full on our carpet page, but the short version is that no budget robot publishes figures supporting embedded-grit removal from deep pile.
Cope with clutter. A robot on a floor with cables, socks and toys gets stuck, and no machine at this price publishes object recognition. It is a maintenance tool for a maintained floor.
Upholstery, cars, ceilings, skirting boards. Everything above the floor is still yours.
What it costs to keep running
Electricity is trivial and nobody publishes charger draw for these machines, so we will not invent a figure. The costs that are real are consumables: filters, side brushes, main brushes, mop pads if it mops, and dock bags if it has a dock. At the manufacturers' own stated dock intervals that is roughly five to seven bags a year on a bagged dock, and zero on the Shark AV2501AE's bagless one.
There is also a cost nobody prices: the app. Every mapped robot here depends on a manufacturer's cloud service for its map, its zones and its scheduling. If that service is retired, a mapped robot degrades into an expensive bump-and-run machine. iRobot is the safest bet on that specific risk; the very cheap brands are the least safe. Who should buy one
Pet households on hard floors. Daily hair pickup is the single strongest case in the category.
Single-floor homes and apartments. No stairs means no gap in what the robot covers.
Anyone who will not vacuum daily, which is almost everyone. The robot's advantage is doing the thing you would not.
People with mobility limitations, for whom pushing an upright is genuinely difficult. This is a use case the category rarely markets to and serves very well.
Who should not
Wall-to-wall deep pile homes. The published figures do not support it and you will be disappointed.
Cluttered floors, if the tidying is not going to happen. The robot will get stuck and then it will stop being used.
Anyone expecting to stop owning a regular vacuum. You will not. Budget for both.
Multi-story homes on a tight budget, unless you are willing to carry the robot between floors — the mapped machines from Roborock and Lefant publish multi-floor maps precisely because this is common.
The honest summary
A robot vacuum is a supplement that changes your baseline, not a replacement that removes a chore. Bought as the first, it is one of the better appliance purchases available. Bought as the second, it disappoints — and that mismatch, not any specification, is why so many end up unused.
What we cannot tell you
How often any specific robot gets stuck in your home, how well its navigation copes with your furniture, or how long its manufacturer will keep the app running. Those are the three questions that decide long-term satisfaction and none of them appear on a spec sheet. We have not run any of these machines, and we are not going to imply otherwise.

Do robot vacuums actually work?+−
For daily maintenance of hard floors and low-pile rugs, yes — and the frequency is the point: a floor cleaned daily at moderate power is cleaner than one cleaned hard once a week. For deep carpet, stairs and above-floor work, they do not replace a regular vacuum.
Do I still need a regular vacuum if I have a robot?+−
Yes. No robot climbs stairs, none do upholstery or above-floor cleaning, and none publish figures supporting deep-pile carpet cleaning. Budget for both machines rather than treating the robot as a replacement.
How long do robot vacuums last?+−
The hardware question and the software question have different answers. Nobody publishes a battery cycle rating. More importantly, a mapped robot depends on its manufacturer's cloud service for maps, zones and scheduling — and if that service is retired, the robot degrades into a bump-and-run machine.
Are robot vacuums good for pet hair?+−
On hard floors, very — daily pickup is exactly what a shedding household needs. Look for a published anti-tangle brush design, and strongly consider a dock, because the on-board bin will fill every single run.
Do robot vacuums use much electricity?+−
No, and none of these manufacturers publish charger consumption, so any specific figure would be a guess. The real ongoing costs are consumables: filters, brushes, mop pads and — on a bagged dock — roughly five to seven bags a year.
