Worth it if a pet lives there. Probably not otherwise. A dock converts emptying from a task you do after every run into one you do five or six times a year. In a shedding household the on-board bin fills every single run, so the dock is transformative. On lightly-used hard floors, the on-board bin lasts a week anyway and the dock is solving a problem you do not have.
What the dock actually changes
Robot bins are small — 200 to 270 ml on most mapped machines. A dock takes that 200 ml buffer and empties it into a 2.5 to 2.7 liter bag, which is roughly ten times the volume. The manufacturers publish the resulting interval: iRobot states 75 days, Lefant states 75 days, Roborock states 7 to 9 weeks, Shark states 60 days, and ILIFE states up to 280 days across the five bags in the box.
That is the whole feature. It does not clean better, it does not navigate better, and it does not extend runtime. It changes how often the machine demands your attention, from roughly daily to roughly bi-monthly.
The cost the sticker price hides
Every one of those docks except Shark's is bagged, and bags are a consumable you buy forever. At the manufacturers' own stated intervals, a self-emptying robot goes through roughly five bags a year (iRobot and Lefant, at 75 days) to six or seven (Roborock, at 7-9 weeks). Over three years that is fifteen to twenty-one bags.
We are not going to print a dollar total, because bag prices move and this site only shows prices that come from the live layer. What we will do is state the quantity clearly, because that is the number nobody puts next to the machine's price — and because fifteen to twenty-one of anything is a real recurring purchase.

The allergy case cuts the other way
If dust allergy is why you want a dock, the bagged ones are the right answer despite their ongoing cost. A sealed bag goes into the bin closed. iRobot publishes bag filtration at 99% of allergens as small as 0.7 microns, which is a specific, checkable claim. Shark's bagless dock has excellent filtration while it is running and still requires you to open a bin of concentrated fine dust to empty it.
This is exactly the same trade as bagged versus bagless vacuums, in miniature, and it resolves the same way: bags cost money and protect you at the moment of emptying; bagless saves money and does not.
Who should buy a dock
Pet households. The on-board bin fills every run. This is the case the dock was built for.
Anyone over about 1,500 square feet. More floor means more debris per run, whatever is shedding.
Allergy households — but buy a bagged dock, and treat the bags as part of the price.
Anyone who has stopped using a robot because the daily emptying became a chore. That is a very common failure mode and the dock is the fix.
Who should not
Small hard-floor homes. The 600 ml eufy 11S MAX bin goes a week at that dirt load; a dock adds cost and floor space for nothing.
Anyone short of floor space. These docks are bulky and need clearance either side.
Light sleepers, if it runs at night. Roborock publishes 65 dB for the Q7 M5+, and the emptying cycle is startling the first time.
What we cannot tell you
Whether the stated intervals hold in your house. 75 days assumes a particular dirt load and nobody publishes the assumption behind it. A shedding shepherd will fill a bag faster than a single person on tile, and the difference is likely large. Treat the published intervals as the manufacturers' best case.
