Robot Vacuums

Roomba alternatives, and what you gain by leaving

iRobot invented this category and still has the deepest parts network in it. Every reason to buy something else comes down to a figure iRobot declines to publish.

By Scooter M. · Published September 27, 2026

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty vacuums. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead is read the manuals, compile the published specifications, and work out what each machine costs to run for three years — the method is written out in full.

We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what we recommend or the order we recommend it in. Full disclosure.

Leave Roomba for a published figure; stay for the parts network. Every serious alternative publishes something iRobot does not. Roborock and Dreame publish pascal suction figures and bigger dock bags. Shark publishes a bagless dock with True HEPA so the dock costs nothing to run. ILIFE publishes no-go zones and virtual walls at the lowest price here. What iRobot publishes that none of them match is a decade of spare brushes, filters and batteries for models long out of production — which, on a machine with a battery nobody rates, is a real argument.

What iRobot will not tell you

Start with the gap, because it is the reason this search exists. iRobot publishes no suction figure for the Roomba 105 in any unit — not pascals, not air watts. What it publishes instead is a relative claim: "70x more power-lifting suction", measured against its own Roomba 600 series. That is a comparison with an eleven-year-old machine, not with anything you are choosing between.

Roborock publishes 8,000 and 10,000 Pa. Dreame publishes 13,000. ILIFE publishes up to 10,000. None of those brands publishes a measurement method either, so the pascal numbers are not comparable across brands — but they are at least numbers about the machine in front of you rather than about a discontinued one.

The four real reasons people leave

1. The dock bag, which iRobot charges for forever

Roomba's AutoEmpty dock publishes up to 75 days hands-free with a bag rated 99% of allergens to 0.7 microns — and that bag is a purchase for as long as you own the machine, roughly five changes a year. Shark's self-empty bases are bagless with True HEPA rated 99.97% to 0.3 microns: better filtration figure, no consumable at all. Dreame publishes a 5-liter bag rated 150 days, which is roughly twice Roomba's interval. Either way the dock is where the money goes, and we price that out here.

2. Mapping detail

iRobot publishes ClearView LiDAR and cliff sensors. It does not publish multi-floor maps or no-go zones by name on the 105. Roborock's Q7 L5, Dreame's D20 Plus and ILIFE's A30 Pro all publish multi-floor maps and no-go zones explicitly, and the ILIFE adds virtual walls. If you carry the robot between floors or need it to stay away from a cable nest, those are the published lines to look for. The full mapping ranking is here.

3. Mopping in the same machine

Roomba's Combo AE mops with a micro-pump-fed pad and, usefully, publishes automatic carpet detection and avoidance. Shark's Matrix Plus publishes sonic mopping at 100 scrubs a minute; Dreame publishes 32 water levels and a 350 ml tank. If mopping is why you are shopping, the alternatives publish more aggressive systems — though none of them replaces a real wet/dry machine on a sticky floor.

4. Price, honestly

The Roborock Q7 L5 publishes 360-degree LiDAR, multi-floor maps, no-go zones, 150 minutes and a 270 ml bin at the lowest price of any machine on this page. It has no dock. If what you wanted was a mapping robot rather than a self-emptying one, the cheapest genuine alternative to a Roomba is also one of the best-documented.

What the numbers say

  • Highest published suction figure on the site, at 10,000 Pa
  • 2.7-liter dock bag is larger than the iRobot's and rated for a comparable interval
  • Anti-tangle on both brushes, which is the pet-hair spec that matters
  • 150 minutes plus recharge-and-resume covers a large floor

Where it stops

  • Dock bags are a permanent consumable
  • The dock is large and 65 dB when emptying is genuinely startling the first time
  • Pa figures remain incomparable between brands, however impressive 10,000 sounds

Who it is for

Pet households with real square footage, where the on-board bin is the daily annoyance.

What the numbers say

  • Five bags in the box is real money that the competition charges separately for
  • Full LiDAR SLAM mapping with virtual walls at a budget price
  • 10,000 Pa published, matching the dearest robot here

Where it stops

  • 72 dB is the loudest robot figure on the site
  • 200 ml dustbin is the smallest here — the 2-in-1 tank splits capacity with the water
  • The 150-minute rating is explicitly the gentle-suction number

Every figure above is the manufacturer's own published number. Where a manufacturer publishes nothing, the row says "Not published" rather than an estimate.

What the numbers say

  • A bagless 60-day base means the dock costs nothing to run, where every Roomba AutoEmpty dock needs bags for as long as you own it
  • True HEPA at 99.97% down to 0.3 microns in the base, against iRobot's 99% at 0.7 microns
  • Its percentage claims name the comparator model and, for the stain claim, a modified IEC 62885-6 test — almost nothing in this category does either

Where it stops

  • No suction figure in any unit, so it cannot be compared numerically with the pascal-publishing brands
  • 110 minutes is the shortest rated runtime of any machine on this page
  • 17 lb listed and a physically large base, which is a real consideration in a small apartment

Who it is for

A mixed-floor home with pets that wants vacuum and mop in one pass, and does not want to buy dock bags for the rest of the machine's life.

Skip it if

You want the mop to be more than a damp pad on hard floors. Sonic scrubbing is a genuine step up from dragging a cloth, but it is still a pad — a stuck-on kitchen spill wants a wet/dry machine, not a robot.

Every figure above is the manufacturer's own published number. Where a manufacturer publishes nothing, the row says "Not published" rather than an estimate.

What the numbers say

  • A 5-liter dock bag is the largest published on this site, and 150 days is roughly four times a Roborock Q7 M5+ dock interval
  • 180 minutes of rated runtime, beaten on this site only by the Roomba 105's 200
  • A 500 ml dustbin and a 350 ml tank are both large for this price, and editable multi-floor maps are published rather than implied

Where it stops

  • 13,000 Pa is a pascal claim with no method, and the listing's own suction field prints a distance in meters
  • No noise rating, no weight and no warranty term published anywhere on the listing
  • Cartridge filtration with no HEPA claim, on a machine sold partly on pet hair

Who it is for

A multi-floor home with pets that wants the dock emptied as rarely as possible, and is content to judge suction on outcome rather than on a number nobody can verify.

What the numbers say

  • Publishes a suction figure, unlike most of the field
  • Dual anti-tangle brushes — both main and side, which most brands only claim for one
  • Multi-floor mapping stored on the robot, so it works in a two-story house
  • Vacuums and mops in the same pass

Where it stops

  • 270 ml dustbin is barely half the Lefant M210's, so it fills fast in a pet home
  • Pa figures are not comparable across brands and Roborock does not publish their method
  • No self-empty dock in this configuration

Who it is for

Which alternative for which house

  • You want the most complete published package: Roborock Q7 M5+ — LiDAR, a sealed dock and the only published noise rating among the docked machines here.
  • You never want to buy a dock bag: Shark Matrix Plus, bagless with True HEPA and the best filtration figure on the page.
  • You have stairs and want the robot to remember both floors: Dreame D20 Plus, which publishes multi-floor maps, no-go zones and the biggest bag here.
  • You want no-go zones at the lowest price: ILIFE A30 Pro, which also ships five dock bags in the box.
  • You want mapping without a dock at all: Roborock Q7 L5, the cheapest genuine LiDAR machine here.
  • You want parts available in ten years: stay with the Roomba. That is the honest answer and no specification changes it.

The reasons to leave that do not hold up

"The alternatives have more suction." They publish bigger pascal numbers. Nobody publishes a method, and iRobot publishes nothing at all, so this is not a comparison — it is one brand's marketing figure next to another brand's blank.

"Cheaper robots clean just as well." Unknown, and unknowable from the spec sheets. What is knowable is that cheaper robots publish more about themselves, which is a different claim and the one this page is built on.

"Roomba is just paying for the name." Partly, and partly for a parts network that genuinely outlasts the machine. Whether that is worth the premium is the same question we ask about Roomba directly.

We have not used any of these machines. Everything here is read off the manufacturers' own listings and compared where the units mean the same thing. A spec sheet cannot tell you which app is still supported in five years, how a dock behaves after a winter, or which brand answers the phone. Our method page states exactly where our evidence stops.

Common questions

What is the best Roomba alternative?

On published figures, the Roborock Q7 M5+: PreciSense LiDAR, a sealed 2.7-liter dock bag, 10,000 Pa stated and the only published noise rating among the docked machines here. If never buying a dock bag matters more, Shark's Matrix Plus is bagless with True HEPA at 99.97% down to 0.3 microns.

Are cheaper robot vacuums as good as a Roomba?

Nobody can answer that from the specifications, because iRobot publishes no suction figure at all and the brands that do publish pascals do not publish a method. What is checkable is disclosure: Roborock, Dreame and ILIFE publish multi-floor maps, no-go zones, noise ratings and dock intervals that iRobot leaves unstated on the Roomba 105.

Why do Roomba docks need bags?

Because iRobot chose a bagged AutoEmpty design: up to 75 days hands-free with a bag rated 99% of allergens to 0.7 microns, replaced about five times a year for as long as you own it. Shark chose bagless bases with True HEPA instead — no consumable, and a better published filtration figure. That is the single clearest running-cost difference between the brands.

What does Roomba do better than the alternatives?

Parts. iRobot has sold robot vacuums longer than anyone and still stocks brushes, filters and batteries for models years out of production. Since no brand on this page publishes a battery cycle rating, the real question is whether you can buy a replacement cell in five years — and that is the one column where Roomba wins outright.

Is there a cheap alternative to a Roomba with mapping?

Yes. The Roborock Q7 L5 publishes 360-degree LiDAR with multi-floor maps and no-go zones, 150 minutes of runtime and a 270 ml bin, at the lowest price of any machine on this page. It has no self-emptying dock, which is most of what you are paying for on the dearer models.

Should I switch from Roomba to Roborock or Dreame?

Switch for a specific published figure you want: a bigger dock bag, a longer interval, named multi-floor maps or no-go zones, or a stated noise rating. Do not switch on a suction comparison, because there is no comparable figure on either side. And weigh the parts network, which is the thing iRobot still wins and no rival publishes an answer to.
